RADIATION DAMAGE OF SHIELDING GLASS WINDOW

Journal Article · · Ann. Rept. Radiation Center Osaka Prefect.
OSTI ID:4828385
A summary of shielding glass window incidents which occurred over the world is given, and a report is presented on the damaged shielding glass window of the Osaka Radiation Center. On March 10, 1961, the second glass from the hot side of the 8-glass window of Hot Cell 1 (10 kc) was found damaged by many cracks and fractures, although the window was not exposed to radiation for 30 hr prior to the incident. The fractures ran parallel to glass surface and showed a branching pattern (Lichtenberg's figure), and surface discharges were found on both sides. The fractures were independent of striae or bubbles in the glass. New fractures were produced by the light flashes from gamma irradiation. The electrical conductivity of the glass is very low.
