A reactor fuel element with improved heat transfer is designed in which the number of welds required for a given quantity of fuel is considerably reduced. The fuel element comprises a coiled protective can filled with bodies of fissile material and mounted within a graphite sleeve in a reactor channel. Ceramic spacers are inserted between some of the fissile bodies to provide cool can areas for spider supports within the sleeve. Fins may be provided on the can. (D.L.C.)
