"CRUD" SCRUBBING WITH A PUREX-TYPE ZEBRA CARTRIDGE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4827752

To investigate the possibility of crud entrainment limiting decontamination factors in the Purex solvent extraction process, pilot plant tests were made in a glass column containing Zebra scrub and nozzle plate extraction section cartridges. The crud was simulated by dispersion of precipitated MnO/sub 2/ in the organic phase, and an interfacial crud was formed when the organic phase was contacted with the aqueous scrub. The results indicate that Zebra dispersion removes the crud from the organic phase, but that talc or bentonite is necessary in order that the crud would be flushed out of the scrub section by the HAS flow. Other possible benefits of the talc are given. (D.L.C.)
