The heat transfer surface of the GEC fuel element can is described, and the flow pattern produced in the cooling gas ls discussed. A description is glven of experimental techniques used to determine the can performance, including a discussion of problems arlslng from the provision of hlgh heat fluxes from stainless steel heater bars. The over-all can performance ls considered and local variations are dlscussed. A brief descrlptlon of means of avoiding apparent local variations arising from the testing techniques is given. Effects of irradiation of the canned fuel on the heat transfer surface is considered and experimental techniques for evaluating them in the laboratory are descrlbed. The effect of reactor conditions of gas temperature and heat flux on heat transfer data obtained under less severe conditions is considered. (auth)
