CONTINUOUS SLAG AND CRUCIBLE DISSOLVER

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4827319
Continuous dissolution of slag and crucibles offers two advantages: capacity increase over the present batch rate and size reduction to critically safe dimensions. The 5-inch lD by 10-foot high dissolver continuously dissolved simulated slag and crucibles at a rate of 240 kg per day. The throughput rate was limited by the duration of the vigorous consecutive reactions which dissolved the can containing the slag and crucibles, and the fine solids within the can. The slow dissolving crucible chips which settled to an equilibrium heel had no effect on the dissolver capacity. The feed materials peculiar to slag and crucibles significantly influenced the design of the equipment, but caused no problems during the operation of the pilot plant. Corrosion was irregular, with the principal material of construction, AlSI 309S Nb stainless steel, showing widely variable corrosion rates. (auth)
