ION-EXCHANGE ELUTION SEQUENCES WITH CHELATING ELUANTS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4827318

Ion-exchange elution sequences are developed for some di- and trivalent metal ions. The eluants studied include ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, citric acid, nitrilotriacetic acid, hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid, and diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid. lt is found that the addition of a very large amount of common ion actually decreases the efficiency of the separation. The problem of removng the common ion from the rare earths is studied. The effects of the pH of the eluant and the relative concentrations of 2+ and 3+ ions in the separating mixture are studied. A method is described for removing Th from the heavy rare earths. (T.F.H.)
