A FAST NEUTRON TIME-OF-FLIGHT SPECTROMETER

Journal Article · · Nuclear Instr. & Methods

A time-of-flight spectrometer to measure the neutron energy spectrum and the angular distribution of elastically and inelastically scattered fast neutrons is described. The spectro meter is of the associated-charged-particle type. The time resolution of the spectrometer is 2 nsec. The ultimate solution of this spectrometer is less than 0.5 nsec; limitations are due to photomultiplier quality. The linearity of the spectrometer response is determined over the range o 0 to 100 nsec. A typical inelastic scattered spectrum from l4.6-Mev neutron bombardment of carbon is presented. A level in C/sup 12/ at lO Mev excitation energy is reported. Other groups of neutrons corresponding to the ground state nd the 4.43-Mev level are also reported. (auth)
