ALUMINIUM ALLOYS WITH IMPROVED CORROSION RESISTANCE IN HIGH TEMPERATURE WATER

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4826353

Small additions of Si to Al-Ni alloys are harmful for the high temperature corrosion resistance while addition of 10% Si give alloys with promising properties. Two Al alloys with a high Si content IFA 2 and IFA 3 were tested in loops together with X8001 aluminum st 230 and 265 deg C. In tests with high flow rate the oxide frlm on the X800l samples was found to flake off after a certain exposure time. Prefilming of the aluminum in autoclaves prior to the loop tests had a beneficial effect on all the tested alloys. The time before break-away was increased and the corrosion rate in this period decreased. Break- away did not occur at all in loop test at 265 deg on IFA 2 and IFA 3 aluminum pretreated in distilled water at 315 deg C, and the corrosion rate was as low as 60 microns/year. X8001 aluminum suffered break-away after 40 days, and the post- break-away corrosion rate was about 400 microns/year. (auth)
