RESEARCH ON THE SYSTEM ZIRCONIUM-OXYGEN. II. RESEARCH ON THE KINETICS OF THE REACTION BETWEEN ZIRCONIUM AND OXYGEN AND ALSO THE CONSTITUTION OF THE SYSTEM ZIRCONIUM-OXYGEN (in German)
The constitution of the Zr- ZrO/sub 2// system was established by means of metallographic investigation and resistivity measurements. Wires of reactor grade zirconium were isothermally and isobarically loaded with oxygen at a pressure of 1.5 x 10/sup -3/ mm of mercury and at temperatures in the range l600- 2030 deg K. Under these conditions, a uniform oxygen concentration existed throughout the wire cross section at all stages of oxygen loading. According to the present investigation, the phase diagram differs in some particulars from earlier diagrams. These deviations refer to the solubility of oxygen in alpha zirconium, the delineation of the two phase region between alpha and BETA zirconium, and the solubility of Zr in ZrO/sub 2/. The form of the solubility limit of Zr in ZrO/sub 2/ suggests the existence of a high temperature form of ZrO/sub 2/ stable above 1850 deg K. This high temperature form could not be retained by quenching and was therefore not investigated further. A knowledge of the total emissivity and the resistivity of the oxide was of importance for adjusting the temperature of the specimens. Approximate values of these quantities were determined. (auth)
