A single crystal of KI is kept in a 6.3-kOe field that is parallel either to the [100] or [110] directions for a period of 24 hr. The field is then reduced to a low value (0 to 105 Oe) for a variable period up to 120 min, then increased again to 6.3 kOe, and the final/initial ratio of the magnetization signal intensities is measured. The relaxation of nuclear magnetization of I127 is thus found as a function of time, and is observed to take place in three steps. The first step is suggested to be caused by spin mixing between I and K, the second to be peculiar to nuclei having quadrupole electric moments, and the third to be caused by spinlattice relaxation.
