Three major oil companies, reportedly including Conoco and BP, are negotiating to participate in an 830,000-m.t./year methanol project planned by International Offshore Chemicals (IOC; Aberdeen, UK) near the St. Fergus terminal in northeast Scotland (CW, July 31, p.24). ICI, whose methanol technology is being proposed for the $255-million project, has not been ruled out as a possible partner. ICI is the UK`s only methanol producer, with 500,000 m.t./year of capacity. Its total sales, internal and external, are larger than its production.
