Title: NON-CORROSIVE REACTOR FUEL SYSTEM

Abstract

A non-corrosive nuclear reactor fuel system was developed utilizing a molten plutonium-- iron alloy fuel having about 2 at.% carbon and contained in a tantalum vessel. This carbon reacts with the interior surface of the tantalum vessel to form a plutonium resistant self-healing tantalum carbide film. (AEC)

  • The application of a liquid metal fuel, consisting of 8-12 at.% Fe, 2 at.% C, and the balance Pu, in tantalum containers is discussed. The C in the fuel creates an autoregenerative film of tantalum carbide on the surface of the container, preventing its attack by the molten Pu. (NPO)
  • An improved plutonium reactor liquid fuel is described for utilization in a nuclear reactor having a tantalum fuel containment vessel. The fuel consists of plutonium and a diluent such as iron, cobalt, nickel, cerium, cerium-- iron, cerium--cobalt, cerium--nickel, and cerium--copper, and an additive of carbon and silicon. The carbon and silicon react with the tantalum container surface to form a coating that is self-healing and prevents the corrosive action of liquid plutonium on the said tantalum container. (AEC)
  • This patent describes a battery electrical connection system for use with corrosive electrolyte batteries. It comprises: battery terminals, each being integrally attached to a plate strap within a battery; conductor cables, each securely cast and engaged into one of the battery terminals to form an electrical connection; conductor cable insulation; battery seals integral with and extending the exterior of the battery over the electrical connections, wherein the seals electrically and chemically isolate each of the electrical connections; a conductor cable terminal lug connector; and an insulated ungrounded connector.
