Studies on the effects of carrier-free I/sup 131/ and P/sup 32/ on the anaerobic digestion of waste sludge are discussed. The problem of radioactive waste disposal deals with those wastes from the atomic energy industry which are high in volume but of low-level activity. Carrier-free concentrations of I/sup 131/ from 1 to 600 mc/l and P/sup 32/ from 1 to 800 mc/l were investigated in an effort to establish what would constitute the tolerance level during anaerobic digestion of sludge. Due to the long half life of some radioactive materials, it is necessary to evaluate the ultimate fate of these wastes before any signiflcant quantities can be released into the air, soil, or stream. Objectives of the investigation are included. The procedures and methods carrying out the studies with carrier-free I/sup 131/ and a discussion of the results are presented. Analytical data are summarized, and the results based on information from 72 digesters during 5 runs of carrier-free I/sup 131/ with concentrations up to 100 mc/l are given. The studies of critical concentrations of carrier-free P/sup 32/ which affect anaerobic digestion are also discussed. (Public Health Eng. Abstr., 41: No. 11, 1961).
