A Co/sup 60/ gamma -ray source was used to sterilize cocarboxylase hydrochloride (dried) contaminated by (1) bacteria and spores of C. welchii, (2) C. septicum, and (3) E. coli bacteria. A quantity of energy equivalent to 4 x 10/ sup 5/ rep was sufficient to sterilize the preparation and not cause any decomposition. In order to kill the same bacteria in an aqueous suspension, unsporing E. coli required 8 x 10/sup 5/ rep, and sporing C. welchii and C. septicum required 1.6 x 10/sup 6/ rep. (OID)
