PROCESS OF MAKING A NEUTRONIC REACTOR FUEL ELEMENT COMPOSITIONS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4822026

A process is given for making a ceramic-like material suitable for use as a nuclear fuel. The material consists of a solid solution of plutonium dioxide in uranium dioxide and is produced from a uranyl nitrate- plutonium nitrate solution containing uranium and plutonium in the desired ratio. The uranium and plutonium are first precipitated from the solution by addition of NH/ sub 4/OH and the dried precipitate is then calcined at 600 deg C in a hydrogen atmosphere to yield the desired solid solution of PuO/sub 2/ in UO/sub 2/.
