INVESTIGATION OF REFRACTORY METAL BERYLLIDES AND SILICIDES AS VERY HIGH TEMPERATURE MATERIALS. Progress Report No. 8 for period July 1, 1961 to September 30, 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4821996
The investigation of refractory metal beryllides and silicides for very high temperature (>2500 deg F) applications for short time use, 10 hours or less, was continued. Measurements to determine the impact, thermal shock, and oxidation resistance of Ta/sub 2/Be/sub 17/ and WSi/sub 2/ in the intermediate temperature region are reported and discussed. Oxidation resistance measurements on Ta/sub 2/B2/sub 17/ at 3000 deg F are reported also. Vapor pressure measurements by the Knudsen cell technique and oxidation rate determinations for TaBe/sub 12/' Ta/sub 2/Be/sub 17/, Zr/sub 2/Be/sub 17/, and ZrBe/sub 13/ arre reported and discussed. The products of oxidation of Zr/sub 2/Be/sub 17/ are discussed. Initial screening oxidation resistance measurements on beryllidesilicide ternarys are reported. (auth)
