INTERACTION OF HIGH FREQUENCY ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS WITH PLASMA (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Nuclear Fusion, Suppl.
OSTI ID:4821864
The interaction between plasma and traveling and standing electromagnetic waves is studied within a frequency range from 0.6 to 6 Mc. The character of the damping of a high-frequency field in a plasma, which depends on the parameters of the plasma and the field, is experimentally investigated in devices having discharge tubes with toroidal and linear configurations. The influence of the high-frequency field upon the charged particle distributions in the plasma is studied. The existence of radial forces acting on plasma in a high- frequency field, and the compression of plasma toward the axis of the discharge as a result of these forces is shown. In devices with a traveling electromagnetic wave, the constant azimuthal current arising as a result of the transport of plasma electrons by the wave is investigated. The dependence of this current upon the plasma and wave parameters is found. It is shown that azimuthal currents of magnitude higher than some critical value excite instabilities of a beam '' character in the plasma. (auth)
