HIGHER RESONANCES IN PION-NUCLEON REACTIONS AND THE ISOBAR MODEL
Higher resonances in the pion-nucleon reaction are investigated using an isobar model. Introduction of the isobar approximation enables relation of the scattering and one-pion production processes to pion-isobar scattering to be determined, which is calculated in the Chew-Low static approximation. Neglecting the crossing terms (except in the Born term), and if the pion-isobar interaction is sufficiently strong, resonances in pion-isobar scattering in the four states (T,J) = (1/2,1/2,), (3/2,5/2)(5/2,3/2), and (5/2, 5/2) are obtained. The first two of these might give resonances in pion-nucleon reactions. Since the model requires positive parity states, they are p/sub 1/2/, for T = 1/2 and f/sub 5/2, for T = 3/2. Comparison with experiments and discussion of Wong and Ross' s approximation are presented. (auth)
