RECOVERY OF URANIUM VALUES FROM URANIUM BEARING RAW MATERIALS

A process is given for the recovery of uranium from uranium containing ores, concentrates, or residues. Generally, the process comprises treating a finely divided uranium-bearing raw material with a mixture of sulfuric acid and manganese dioxide to oxidize the uranium in the material to the hexavalent state and to leach the resulting hexavalent uranium. Manganese dioxide is superior to ferric sulfate which is usually used in the sulfuric acid leaching solution. The uranium is recovered as the oxide by neutralization of the leach liquor which has been separated from the insoluble material. In the case of ores having a high phosphate content, ferric iron should be added to the leaching solution to complex the phosphate and thus prevent it from precipitating with the uranium.
