Methods are given for the preparation of mono- and dialkyl esters of ortho-phosphoric acid derived by reaction of P/sub 2/O/sub 5/ with alcohols such as 2,6-dimethyl heptanol-4, 2,6,8trimethyl nonanol-4, 2-methyl-7-ethyl decanol-4, 2-methyl7-ethyl indecanol-4 and 3,9-diethy-l -tridecanol-6, in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent. These esters may be used to extract uranium and vanadium values from ores thereof after said ores have been suitably treated with a mineral acid, such as sulfuric acid.
