REGENERATION OF REACTOR FUEL ELEMENTS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4821763
A process is given for concentrating by electrolysis the uranium and/or ploutonium of an aluminum alloy con taining these actinides, after the actinide has been partially consumed by neutron bombardment in a reactor. The alloy is made the anode in a system having an aluminum cathode and cryolite electrolyte. Electrolysis from 22 to 26 ampere-hours removes a sufficient quantity of aluminum from the alloy to make it suitable for reuse.
