PENETRATION OF ARTIFICIAL RADIOACTIVITY IN DEEP WATERS OF THE PACIFIC AND VERTICAL DIFFUSION RATE OF SEA WATER

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4821588

Vertical penetration of Sr/sup 90/ and Cs/sup 137/ down to 5,000 m depth was confirmed in the western North Pacific. Surface values of these radioisotopes ranged from 0.6 to 3.1 mu mu c/l for Sr/sup 90/ and from 0.8 to 4.8 mu mu c/l for Cs/sup 137/, while values at 5,000 m depth were about 0.l mu mu c/l for both. From the vertical variation in the concentratlon of radloisotopes, the vertical diffusion coefficient from 200 to 4,000 m depth was calculated and the value of 200 was obtained. Using the value of 200 for the vertical eddy diffusivity. the time required for complete vertical mixing of about 700 years was obtained for that portion of the Pacific Ocean. (auth)
