Primary and, especially, the secondary stereotactic irradiation of an adenoma of the hypophysis ls signlficantly superior to surgical therapy alone as proven by long-term investigations in 108 cases. This superiority is reflected by the operative mortality, which is 0 of l.6%, as well as by the survival rate and the incidence of recurrence. The rate of improvement of vision is better for 26 to 44% of the patients and that of the visual fields for l7 to 29% in comparison to an open operation alone. The late radiation damages of the chiasma and the optic nerve, which are difficult to distinguish from tumor-recurrences, are a problem which still is not solved satisfactorily. (auth)
