American Superconductor Corporation (ASC) has designed and fabricated racetrack-shaped field coils from PbBSSCO-2223 high temperature superconducting (HTS) wire for a 125 HP, four-pole motor currently being developed in partnership with Reliance Electric Company (REC). These coils were tested individually for electrical performance, then assembled along with copper coils into subsets and tested in a static test apparatus designed to simulate the local magnetic field of the four-pole motor. These subsets will be delivered to Reliance for testing in the cryogenic rotor of the 125 hp motor; full coil sets are currently being fabricated and will be delivered to REC and tested by the end of 1995. In this paper the authors report properties of the individual coils, results of the subset static testing and the effect of compressive stress on critical current.
