Development of twisted high-temperature superconducting composites
- American Superconductor Corp., Westborough, MA (United States)
Multifilamentary high-temperature superconducting (HTS) composites have been developed for alternating current (AC) applications. The authors report on HTS conductors containing twisted Bi-2223 filaments that were manufactured using a modified powder-in-tube (PIT) process. Transport critical current densities of 16,000 A/cm{sup 2} (77 K, self field, 1{mu}V/cm) have been achieved in tapes with final twist pitches as small as 9 mm while control samples (not twisted) achieved J{sub c} levels of 17,700 A/cm{sup 2}. This 90% J{sub c} retention for twisted filamentary composites is promising for further development of this technology. Additionally, the mechanical properties of these tapes rival those of conventionally produced untwisted PIT tapes. These conductors are strongly-linked and are thus suitable for use in AC applications.
