An apparatus and a process for direct spectrographic measurement of small amounts of a selected element in a gas are described which give results unafected by the particle size of the element or compound being measured. The apparatus and process are described with particular reference to beryllium in air. In the process, filtered air is fed into an intermittent electric arc discharge, the gas is withdrawn from the discharge, the radiation emitted by the discharge is split into a spectrum, and the intensity of a line characteristic of beryllium is measured relative to the background.
