DOSIMETRY FOR A TOTAL-BODY IRRADIATION CHAMBER

Journal Article · · Radiology (U.S.)
OSTI ID:4820227
Design features and dosimetry are reported of a human whole-body irradiation chamber employing 8 Cs/sup 137/ sources with an initial strength of 300 curies each. When in treatment position, the sources are housed in 4 upright posts located in the corners of the treatment area. Each treatment portal has a removable beam-absorber holder to which a wide variety of absorbers and beam shaping blocks can be secured. Dosimetry measurements were made with the aid of a full-size mannequin constructed of Fiberglas, with Lucite tubes inserted at suitable intervals to provide channels for the dosimetry throughout the extent of the phantom. Measurements were carried out with a Victoreen condenserr meter and multiple small Landsverk thimble chambers, calibrated for energy dependence. A floor plan, photograph, and cross-section of the lrradiation unit and isodose patterns for various absorbers are presented. It is pointed out that in whole-body irradiation, the organ dose and, therefore the integral dose in a given volume must be considered as an indicator of dose rather than point dose. (C.H.)
