INTERSTITIAL IRRADIATION OF BRAIN TUMORS WITH IRIDIUM 192

Journal Article · · Radiology (U.S.)
OSTI ID:4820225
A procedure is described for the interstitial irradiation of brain tumors with sources consisting of lr/sup 192/ seeds encased in steel placed at 1- cm intervals along a nylon ribbon. The ribbons are implanted at craniotomy after surgical decompression of the tumor. Dose rate is calculated from raeasurements of source distribution on postoperative radiographs and a tumor dose of 5,000 to 7,000 r in 4 to 7 days is administered before removal of the implant by gently withdrawing the ribbon. Initial appraisal of several patients who received this form of therapy was encouraging. (C.H.)
