The number of beta particles which in the time t after the fission of a U/sup 236/ nucleus will be emitted, on the average, was determined directly. For this it was observed how the beta activity in a uranium layer of about 50 mg/ cm/sup 2/ increased during irradiation with thermal neutrons. Up to an hour after fission, 4.4 plus or minus 0.5 beta decays were measured for each fission. The stated error is the sum of the systematic and statistical error. The graphical integration of the calculated value of beta activity between one hour and 100 yr yielded 2.2 plus or minus 0.4 beta decays for each fission of a U/ sup 236/ nucleus. With the help of the chain yield and the nuclear charge of the stable end products of the fission, a value of 6.3 beta decays per fission was calculated. The following values were inferred from these results: at 0 to 0.5 sec, beta (t)= 0.7e-/sup -1.6t/; at0.5 to 30 sec, beta (t)= 0.23 t/sup -0.6 and at 30 sec to 10 days, beta (t) = 1.2t/sup -1.14/ where t is in sec onds. The agreement with earlier measurements was good. (tr-auth)
