A STUDY OF DESIGN AND COST DATA FOR FAMILY AND SMALL-GROUP FALLOUT SHELTERS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4819966
A study of five durable famlly and small-group fallout shelter systems showed that three of them can be provided by Individual labor and with austere accommodations for about 00 to 50, equivalent to a unit cost of about 0 per person. On the same basis, the two other designs cost somewhat more either totally or per person. Contracting for and commodiously outfitting these shelter systems approximately doubles the costs. A less desirable but satisfactory shelter can be put in, using Class B concrete pipe, for about 0 on a do-it- yourself basis. The shelters were designed so that the size can be increased in one direction with relatively small incremental cost. The systems were divided into component packages, which can be selected at will to yield shelters of varying degrees of livability. Design, excavation, and price data are included for the convenience of those who wish to build their own systems. (auth)
