ON THE ELECTROMAGNETIC POTENTIALS OF AN ELECTROMAGNETIC DIPOLE IN MOTION

Journal Article · · Acta Phys. Polon.
OSTI ID:4819835

Starting from the Lorentz solutions of Maxwell's equations, expressions are derived for the electromagnetic potentials of an electromagnetic dipole in arbitrary motion. By utilizing Dirac's sigma function in the description of the field sources, these expressions are generalized to multipoles of arbitrary order. For a multipole at rest, they become identical in the wave zone with the well-known formulas for multipole radiation despite the fact that the time dependence of the multipole moments is widely arbitrary.
