AN INVESTIGATION OF THE ELASTIC SCATTERING OF $lambda$ HYPERONS FROM PROTONS

An investigation was made into the elastic scattering of LAMBDA hyperons from protons. The particle interactions were photographed in a propane bubble chamber. The h hyperons were produced by the interactions of 1.15 Bev/c K- mesons in the propane. Some 14,000 LAMBDA decays were observed with LAMBDA momenta distributed frora 150 to 1500 Mev/c in the laboratory co-ordinate system. Thirty-one examples of the elastic scattering process LAMBDA + p yields LAMBDA + p were found. Based on these figures, the elastic scattering cross section is estimated to be 20.0 plus or minus 4.9 mb. Corrections for bubble chamber geometry and contamination frora carbon interactions are introduced in the calculation of the cross section. The results of this experiment are compared with existing experimental data and several theoretical predictions. The data are shown to be in good agreement with the previous experimental investigations. The data agree satisfactorily with the theoretical predictions but are not numerous enough to provide a basis for judging the relative merits of the individual predictions.
