FABRICATION AND PROPERTIES OF TRANSLUCENT BERYLLIUM OXIDE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4819261

The techniques by which translucent beryllia was hot pressed are described. Sizes ranging as great as 5 inches in diameter and 1 inch thick were fabricated with both high purity beryllia and beryllia doped with magnesia. Density of the material ranges above 99.5% of theoretical. Miicrostructure studies indicated that the material is characterized by complete removal of grain boundary porosity. Preliminary data on the infrared transmission, the meehanical strength and creep, and the thermal conductivity are presented. It was concluded that the thermal and mechanical properties of fully densified, translucent BeO which are pertinent to performance under hightemperature mechanical loads and thermal stresses are substantially superior to those of opaque BeO ceramics.
