Products of the γ-Radiolysis of Aqueous Cystine Solutions

Journal Article · · Nature (London)
DOI:https://doi.org/10.1038/192352a0· OSTI ID:4819237
Products werec identified in Co60 gamma irradiated unbuffered and actdified cystine solutions at relatively low doses. Oxygenation and deoxygenation of solutions was effected by bubbling oxygen and nitrogen through the solutions during irradiation. The chromatographic data and spot colors suggest that cystine disulfoxide, cysteic acid, cysteine sulfinic acid, alanine, and cysteine are radiolytic products. Reactions are given which explain the mechanism of each yield.
