LUMINESCENCE OF QUARTZ AND QUARTZ GLASS PRODUCED BY $gamma$-RADIATION

Journal Article · · Silikat Tech.
OSTI ID:4819127
Fragments of rock crystal and optical quartz glasses were cut and ground to 20 x 20 x 4 mm disks and irradiated with Co/sup 60/ gamma rays at a dose rate of 2x 10/sup 3/ r. Since the irradiation lasted 10 hr, the total dose was about 2 x 10/sup 6/ r. The irradiated specimens were brought immediately in contact with the AGFA spectrographic plate, Rapid Blue,'' by which the intensive luminescence could be recorded. The luminescence produced by gamma radiation is of long duration and accompanied by a brown discoloration similar to that of smoked quartz. A detailed study of the photographic pictures revealed certain inhomogeneities which were greater in quartz glass than in quartz mineral. The appearance of luminescence was considered proof of the development of metastable conditions. (OID)
