THE MEASUREMENT AND ANALYSIS OF NUCLEAR RADIATION WITH MODERN MEASURING INSTRUMENTS. PARTS I AND II

Journal Article · · Glas.-Instr.-Tech.
OSTI ID:4818998
The present status of nuclear radiation measuring apparatus is reviewed. After a short summary of the theoretical aspects of counting tubes, their construction and operai tion are discussed in detail. Scintillation counters which have greater sensitivity to gamma radiation and better time ' resolution are discussed. A detailed description is given of various types of scintillation counters, which consist of the scintillation crystal, the amplifier for secondary electrons, the photomultiplier, and the recording instrument. CsI(Tl) or NaI(Tl) salts or the crystals of the organic compounds anthracene, stilben, or naphthalene are used as scintillators. Scintillation counters require adequate shielding against background radiation because of their great sensitivity. (OID)
