A gamma ray spectrum of Am/4 was prepared, and the influence of slit widths on the absorption characteristics was determined. Variable slit widths of 1/2 to 1/8 in. were found to show no appreciable effect upon the shape of the diagrams. Also, the slight change in cell length with the 1/2 in. slit does not affect the absorption. A straight line relation holds between the uranium concentration (10 to l50 g of U per liter) and log of current in a 22 mm diameter sample tube. There is a slight divergence from a straight line at the higher concentrations (l50 to 550 g of U per liter). With a 1/2in. wide slit, the current generated in the ionization chamber by the Am/sup 241/ source is decreased to 2.2 x l0/sup -8/ amp. (P.C.H.)
