A new color center giving an absorption band at about 1.9 ev (650 m mu ) was shown to be induced by gamma radiation in certain borate and silicate glasses containing cerium. most of which is in the cerous state. The intensity of the 1.9 ev band increases with increasing cerium content in glasses melted under strongly reducing conditions. The intensity of this band increases rapidly to a maximum with exposure to gamma radiation, and then changes in an oscillatory manner with increasing exposure. The new color center is tentatively designated as (Ce/sup 3+/ + e) in which the number of cerous ions and the number of electrons involved in the formation of the center are unknown. This center is unstable, as shown by the high rate of fading, and is suppressed in the presence of Ce/sup 4+/ ions. This explains the need of having Ce/sup 4+/ ions along with Ce/sup 3+/ ions in order to suppress visible induced absorption. It is postulated that while the Ce/sup 3+/ ions suppress the induced positive hole centers, which give an absorption band at about 2.3 ev (550 m mu ), the Ce/sup 4+/ ions would suppress the formation of the new (Ce/sup 3+/ + e) center which gives the 1.9 ev (650 m mu ) band.
