A linear correlation was found between relative pulse height of plastic scintillators and the ionization potential and Hammett or Taft substituent constants ( sigma and sigma /sub 1/, respectively) of the solvent and fluor that were used in the study. Some aspects of the scintillation mechanism are discussed. (auth)
