Plasma Oscillations in a Magnetic Field as an Initial Value Problem

The oscillation of a plasma, composed of particles of a single type, in a static external magnetic field as an initial value problem is studied. An expression is obtained for the Laplace transform of the electric potential which arises due to the oscillation, and from this is derived the dispersion relation between the frequency of the oscillations and the wave number. For the particular case of propagation perpendicular to the magnetic field, the dispersion equation reduces to that given by Bernstein and that for the case of propagatida along the magnetic field the waves are damped in time. If the phase velocity of the waves is considerably greater than the mean thermal velocity of the particles the damping is slight.
