DEPOSITION OF BORON FROM FUSED SALT BATHS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4818712
A process is outlined for forming adnerent boron coatings on metal surfaces by fused salt bath electrolysis of boron oxide. The electrolysis is carried out at 600 to 700 deg C with a bath consisting of only boron oxide and potassium fluoborate, the amount of boron oxide in the bath being <20 wt%, preferably between 2 and l5 wt%. The advantage of this bath over one containing potassium chloride or fluoride in addition to boron oxide and potassium fluoborate is longer electrolysis periods, thicker boron deposits, and lower temperatures.
