A pulsed mixer-settler of the kind described in British Patent 831,383 is designed with a contamination barrier. In the mixer-settler, air pulses are used to suck liquid from the mixer compartments into mixer tubes and to reinject the liquid into the compartments, and water spray is fed into the columns transmitting the air pulses to present a barrier to contaminants.
