THE KINETIC ENERGY OF FRAGMENTS FROM THE PHOTOFISSION OF Th$sup 23$$sup 2$ (in Russian)

Journal Article · · Atomnaya Energ.
OSTI ID:4818540
Study of the kinetic energy of fission fragments makes it possible to determine the most probable mass ratio m/sub 2//m/sub 1/ which then can bo compared with the radiochemically determined ratio. As such radiochemical data are available for the fragments from the photofission of Th/sup 232/,, the corresponding kinetic energy distribution values were determined by means of a method originally developed for studying the photofission of U/sup 238/ (E. A. Bochagov et al., Zhur. Eksper. i Teoret. Fiz. 38, 1374 (1960)). A Th nitrate preparation on an aluminized collodion film was used as the target of the gamma - ray source. The data obtained indicated that the most probable value of the m/ sub 2/m/sub 1/ ratio is 1.56 which agrees well with the radiochemically obtained value of 1.52 (D. Hiller and D. Martin, Phys. Rev. 90, 581 (1953)). The energy distribution curve of the fragments indicates that the total energy is lower and the half-width of the maximum of the spectrum is larger than the corresponding values of the photofission of U/sup 238/.
