LITHIUM LOADED LIQUID SCINTILLATOR

Lithium-loaded liquid scintillators are discussed in relation to the problems encountered in the detection of thermal neutrons. Lithium propionate is the sait used in the scintillators. The percentage (wt) of lithium propionate that will dissolve in various compositions of toluene-methyl alcohol is graphically shown. The relative light output, for the various compositions, measured with gamma rays, is also graphically shown. This light output is given relative to the light output of toluene + (4g/liter p-terphenyl + 0.0l g/liter POPOP) + methyl alcohol + lithium propionate taken as 1. One percent of lithium propionate gives about 7 x 10/sub 19/ atoms Li/cm/sup 3/, which corresponds to a macroscopic cross section of 5 x 10/sup -3/ cm/sup 2/. This value can be increased by utilizing lithium enriched in lithium-6. The relatively low content of lithium is the main drawback of this scintillator. (N.W.R.)
