COMBINED RADIATION-TEMPERATURE EFFECTS ON HOSE AND SEAL ELASTOMERS (MILESTONE REPORT)

OSTI ID:4818261
Resuits are reported of tests of four elastomers, VitonA, Viton-B, Buna- N, and LS-53, subjected to combined radiation and temperature exposure in air and in OS-45 hydraulic fluid. Properties measured after exposure included tensile strength, percent elongation, and hardness. From a comparison of radiation induced changes with those produced in similar non-radiation exposures, it appears that Buna-N components such as hoses should last as long under irradiation as under non-radiation conditions at temperatures up to about 300 deg F. However, comparison of the materials on the basis of retention of rubber-like properties indicates that superior high-temperature components can be obtained with the Viton compounds by de-rating standard components or by designing specifically for radiation conditions. The LS-53 material does not appear acceptable in OS-45 hydraulic fluid for either radiation or non-radiation conditions. (auth)
