A PROPORTIONAL COUNTER EFFICIENCY STUDY FOR THE CONTINUOUS BETA SPECTRA OF S$sup 35$ AND Pm$sup 147$ (thesis)
The efficiency of a proportional counter for the detection of high- energy electrons was studied. The continuous beta spectra of S/sup 35/ and Pm/ sup 147/ were investigated. Count rateenergy studies were made at various gas pressures with and without an applied magnetic field for two different source positions. The principle of proportional counters and the effects of varying pressure and using a magnetic field are discussed. The apparatus and experimental procedure are described. To detect what improvement in efficiency existed between any two spectra, areas under comparable portions of the spectra plotted on 4 cycle semilog paper were compared. It was found that either an increase in pressure or the application of a magnetic field increased the efficiency of the counter for higher energy particles. (M.C.G.)
