COINCIDENCE STUDIES ON THE DECAYS OF Bi$sup 206$ AND Bi$sup 20$$sup 5$

Using electron-electron and electron-gamma coincidence techniques the decays of Bi/sup 206/ and Bi/sup 205/ are investigated. The measurements on Bi/ sup 206/ are in good agreement with earlier results. In the decay of Bi/sup 206/ the following, previously proposed, excited levels are confirmed: 262.8, 703.3, 76l.0, 987.6, 1013.8, l043.7, 1614.6, l766.4. 2566.5, and 2609.9 kev. The coincidence measurements indirectly suggest a new level in Pb/sup 205/ at 2.3 kev, mainly populated via a 260.5 kev transition from the 262.8 kev level. By studying the internal-conversion electrons following the alpha -decay of Po/sup 209/ the new level is unambiguously proved, since the K-lines of the two transitions of 260.5 and 262.8 kev are found to be present with the same intensity ratio as in the decay of Bi/sup 205/. Furthermore a new level of 1499.4 kev in Pb/sup 205/ is established. (auth)
