The daughter products of Rn contribute considerably to the absorption dose in the lung tissue and their concentration must therefore be determined simultaneously with that of Rn itself. The concept of latent energy'' expressed by H. Kusnetz (Amer. rnd. Hygiene Assn. Quarterly Greek, total alpha decay down to Ra D of all the short-lived daughter products is a suitable index of the aerial contamination. The value of 1.3 x lO/sup 4/ Mev/liter corresponds to the maximum permissible concentration of 1 x 10/sup -11/ curies/liter. Of all the daughters, Ra A is considered to be the most important contributor to the internal dose and was therefore chosen to be determined together with the latent energy. Equations were derived for determining these values with a sufficient accuracy at various equilibrium levels from deposits formed on filter paper after passage of the desired amount of air. This method is considered to be a useful indicator of radiation safety because it permits results to be obtained within 15 minutes and gives a clear picture to which individuals might be exposed.
