Refrigeration and Irradiation. Lowering the Skin Temperature of the Irradiated Fiel

Journal Article · · Radiology

Lowering the skin temperature to 50 to 55 deg F locally, during irradiation with factors of 300 kv and h.v.l. of 4 mm Cu, results in skin sparing (less desquamation and atrophic changes), the possibility of additional dosage with increased depth dose, and less discomfort to the patient locally. These benefits can also be important to younger patients and to those treated with electron beams or wlth drugs (actinomycin D). Better use can be made of conventional machines if a supervoltage unit is not available.
