A plasma containment and heating device is designed which functions in a way similar to an electrical capacitor, storing large quantities of electrical energy in a small volume and having a very short discharge pulse time. The device comprises annular inner and outer electrodes, means for producing a high d- c discharge and a divergent magnetic field between the electrodes, and means for supplying an ionizable gas to the volume between the electrodes.
